A drone survey firm covering Yeovil

Yeovil is the far end of the eastern corridor, roughly an hour from the Exeter base along a mixed road. It is a planned visit rather than a short-notice one, and the sensible way to book it is either as a set of buildings or alongside something else on the same run.

There is a point where being straight about distance matters more than sounding available. An Exeter firm can cover Yeovil properly with a booked date, a fixed price with travel inside it and a report inside 48 hours. What it cannot do is be there this afternoon, and any firm that says otherwise on a website is describing a wish.

This is a manufacturing town with an aviation industry behind it, and the building stock reflects that: large-span industrial roofs, a largely rebuilt commercial centre, and very extensive post-war estates. The industrial roofs are the jobs where an aerial survey changes the economics rather than just the method.

A roof of that size takes a long time to inspect on foot, needs a permit and an access plan, and still leaves the parts nobody can safely reach unrecorded. Flown, it is a morning, it produces a complete set of imagery rather than a sample, and it can be repeated identically next year so the two can be compared. Yeovil is inland and among the drier, more sheltered places covered here, on gently rolling ground in hamstone country. In flying terms that puts it at the good end of the range: fewer lost days, longer usable windows and less of the wind that makes coastal and moor-edge work unpredictable.

The open ridges south of the town do catch the wind, and hamstone weathers softly over time, so there are still local factors worth a line in a report. But the general picture is that a date here, once booked, is likely to hold, which for a job an hour away is worth more than it sounds.

Victorian glove-industry terraces and continuing modern development on the western edge fill out the rest of the stock, with clay double roman tile and concrete interlocking tile as the common coverings.

Around the town the hamstone villages carry a different building stock from the estates: golden limestone walls, stone-slate and clay roofs, and buildings whose weathering is part of their character rather than a defect. A report on one of those needs to say which is which, because hamstone in slow decline and hamstone simply weathering look similar in a photograph.

The country park and Ninesprings on the southern edge give useful open launching ground for anything on that side of town, which is a small practical advantage on an otherwise built-up site.
