A drone survey firm covering Wellington

Wellington is a straightforward run: motorway most of the way, about forty minutes from the Exeter base. It sits between Cullompton and Taunton on the same corridor, so a job here is easy to pair with either, and a Somerset client booking two or three buildings on this stretch gets a better use of a day than one spread across the county.

Being in Somerset rather than Devon changes nothing about how the job is quoted. Travel is inside the fixed price whichever side of the border the building is on, and there is no separate rate for crossing it.

The Blackdown escarpment sits immediately south of the town with the Wellington Monument on top of it. Ground that rises that sharply accelerates wind over the town in south-westerly weather, and the higher streets feel it considerably more than the valley floor does. Two buildings a few hundred metres apart here can be in visibly different conditions, which is a hard thing to explain to an insurer without photographs.

That is one of the more useful things a survey here can settle. Wind damage to a ridge, a verge or a run of clay double roman tile looks the same in isolation whether it happened last week or three winters ago. A dated set of images, taken shortly after an event, is what turns a claim from an argument into a record.

The town has a strong woollen mill legacy, and Tonedale in particular leaves a stock of very large-span roofs that are difficult and expensive to inspect any other way. Multi-bay roofs with internal valley gutters are a specific problem: the valleys sit between spans where nobody can see them from ground level or from the ridge, they silt up quietly, and the first sign of trouble is usually water inside.

From the air, a valley like that can be followed end to end in one pass and photographed at a resolution that shows what is sitting in it. On a building of that size, that is the difference between a survey and a guess, and it is why mill conversions and their owners are a regular source of work here.

The rest of the town is a Georgian and Victorian centre, terraced mill housing and substantial post-war and modern estates spreading north and east, which is more ordinary work but on the same fixed-price, 48 hour report basis.

The Blackdown Hills designation covers the ground immediately south of the town, and a surveyor working there should know what that means in practice. It does not prevent a survey, but it does mean the setting matters, that landowner permission for a launch position is worth having in writing, and that the monument on the escarpment is a landmark with visitors around it much of the year.

Where a property sits inside the designated area, the launch position and the route are chosen with that in mind rather than treated as open countryside.
